Things to do in the local area during your visit

If you’re joining us for a short break, you will probably never need to leave the resort. We have an impressive choice of over 70 activities and facilities to enjoy. However, we are also a fantastic base if you do wish to explore the local area, especially if you choose to stay for a longer holiday.

There are plenty of things to do in Dartmoor and Okehampton. Explore some historic places of interest, enjoy fast-paced water sports, or enjoy the local area’s natural beauty. Here’s a run-down of our top 5 things to do near Okehampton:

Probably one of our closest Dartmoor Attractions, Okehampton Castle is a great place to visit during your stay. Just 10 minutes’ drive away, you can explore the castle, which was once owned by the Sheriff of Devon, Baldwin de Brionne. Enjoy a free audio tour and explore the remains. You can still get a sense of the grandeur and power from the layout of the ruined buildings and motte.

Tone of our favourite things to do in Okehampton, is visit the local museum, housed in an old 19th Century Mill. It features 3 floors of exhibits spanning 5000 years of life on Dartmoor. Find out about Tinning and Mining landscapes, Bronze Age huts and the military on Dartmoor. There are also many temporary exhibits throughout the year, workshops for children and an onsite tearoom and visitor centre.

Lydford Gorge is the deepest river forge in the Southwest and one of the great places to visit on Dartmoor. Its temperate rainforest is now a globally rare habitat and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Explore the ancient woodland and railway to discover the 30m-high Whitelady Waterfall. Or descend into the deepest part of the forge and brave the Devil’s Cauldron Pothole. It’s a Dartmoor must see.

If you love an active break and are looking for things to do in Dartmoor National Park, this is one of the best places to visit. Just 20 minutes away from the resort you will find Roadford Lake. Surrounded by countryside and nestled among the beautiful surroundings of the Wolf Valley. Things to do include: kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, sailing and archery to name just a few.

One of our favourite places to visit near Okehampton is Dingles Fairground. Completely unique to the UK, the fairground museum is a unique collection of operating vintage rides, fairground art and fairground organs.
