The History of Mosaics

Mosaics are one of the oldest forms of art and have a rich and diverse history spanning thousands of years. The earliest known examples date back to the 3rd millennium BCE in Mesopotamia, where small, coloured stones were used to decorate walls and floors. It was the ancient Greeks who elevated mosaic art to new heights, using small pieces of stone, glass, or ceramic to create intricate designs in floors, walls, and ceilings.

During the Roman Empire, mosaic art flourished, becoming a common feature in both public buildings and private homes. Roman mosaics depicted a wide range of subjects, from mythological scenes to everyday life, and were often used to convey wealth and status.
